Using a virtual background during tutoring sessions is a great way to reduce distractions and maintain privacy. In the Learning Portal, you can choose between different background effects — including a blur, a Step Up-branded background, or no effect at all.
Background Options Available
Blur – Softens your background while keeping you in focus
Step Up Background – Adds a branded Step Up backdrop to your video
No Effect – Keeps your real background visible, with no changes
Choose the option that works best for your environment and comfort level.
To Apply a Background Effect from the Lobby
Before joining the session, look for the icon with stars near your video preview

Click the icon and choose from:
Blur
Step Up Background
No Effect
Once selected, your background will adjust automatically
Click “Join” to enter the session with your selected setting
Changing Your Background During a Session
Click the Settings icon in the right-hand menu of the Learning Portal
Locate the Device Stepup section
- Look for the icon with stars near your video preview
Choose your preferred option: Blur, Step Up Background, or None
The change will apply instantly without interrupting your session
