All students who enroll in the Reading program will take the ROAR assessment.
What is ROAR?
ROAR stands for Rapid Online Assessment of Reading—and it’s a quick, fun, and powerful tool we use to check in on a student’s reading skills.
Why do we use it?
ROAR helps us understand where a student is in their reading journey. It checks key skills like phonics, fluency, and comprehension through short, game-like quizzes. This gives us a clear starting point and helps us track growth over time!
What’s it like for students?
- ROAR feels more like a game than a test!
- It’s interactive and adapts based on how the student is doing.
-
Each quiz is fully online and automatically scored—easy for both students and tutors.
Assigned assessments
When students log in to their dashboard, they will see their assigned ROAR assessments which may include:
- Word
- Sentence
- Phoneme
- Letter
- Phonics
When do students take it?
- At the beginning of the year to see where they’re starting
- Again in the middle of the year to check progress
-
One last time at the end of the year to celebrate how far they’ve come!
Your Role as a Tutor:
- Support students with tech and encouragement during ROAR
- Cheer them on—it’s about progress, not perfection!
Instructions
The mini-quizzes will take about 20 minutes, so please begin at the start of your session. Please review this video for an overview of the assessments and follow these steps:
- Log in to your Learning Portal.
- Adjust your video settings to Video Sidebar or Floating Video.
- Copy the link to your student's session guide in a new tab of your internet browser.
- Go to the Action Items and click on Logon to ROAR.
- This will open https://roar.education/signin. Send this link in the chat to your student.
- Copy the username and password from the action item and send it in the chat to your student. Ask your student to sign in with this information.
- If they have trouble or if they don't have a keyboard, you may need to share your screen and input answers for them. Please do not use the Cobrowser as it will not capture accurate results.
- Ask your student to share their screen with you (click the icon of the computer with an arrow).
- Tell your student to Click to Start to begin a game.
- Remember not to coach or provide answers
- Remind students to pay close attention because words may disappear and their scores will depend on how quickly they respond
- Once completed, move on to the next one.
- Take breaks as needed and continue until finished.
- If time permits, you can do homework help or a fun activity.
With ROAR, we’re not just measuring skills—we’re watching students grow into confident, capable readers. Let’s help them roar with success!
