Each UFLI Foundations lesson is carefully structured into 8 instructional steps, designed to build students' foundational reading skills clearly and consistently.

Each step is scripted and accompanied by visual slides to guide you. You don’t have to memorize the routine — just follow the prompts provided in your Session Guide. To help you feel confident leading these sessions, here are examples of how a tutor and student might work through each one.

Getting Started

Placement Test

During your third reading lesson, you will administer the UFLI placement test to determine whether your student needs foundational support or if they should work on reading comprehension lessons. Please use these resources:

Google Form to report to Step Up where your student ended on the assessment

From there, you can work on the recommended UFLI starting lesson or begin Readworks articles.

Where to Find the Lessons

After you report your student's starting lesson to Step Up, you can access Foundational Literacy materials directly from your student’s Session Guide on the Learning Portal:

Join your tutoring session on the Learning Portal
Copy the link for the session guide
Open a virtual whiteboard and open the Library
Under Apps, click on Cobrowser and paste the link
Go to the Main Lesson section of the Session Guide
You’ll see the UFLI slides and scripts

These materials are aligned with the UFLI Foundations curriculum and include everything you need to deliver structured, research-based reading instruction. If you do not see the UFLI lessons, please email tuorsupport@stepuptutoring.org to update your student's session guide. You can find them in the Google Drive in the meantime.
