If your student is learning English as an additional language, they are welcome to receive tutoring through Step Up Tutoring. We provide a range of supports to ensure they feel confident and supported in every session.
Tutor Language Matching
Whenever possible, we aim to match students with tutors who speak their native language. Our tutor community includes speakers of:
Spanish
Armenian
Vietnamese
And many other languages
This helps build stronger relationships and increases student comfort during sessions.
Family Communication
All text messages sent through our Step Up communication system will be automatically translated into the guardian’s preferred language listed in our system. This helps ensure clear, accessible communication for all families.
Math Resources
Our math program, Eedi, is currently available in English only. However, tutors are encouraged to:
Translate questions and explanations as needed
Use visual aids and gestures to support comprehension
Encourage students to verbalize their thinking in the language they’re most comfortable with
Foundational Literacy
Students who need support learning how to read and write will be placed in our Foundational Literacy program. This program teaches:
Phonemic awareness
Phonics
Word study
It is well-suited for early readers, including those still acquiring English.
Reading Comprehension
Our comprehension curriculum uses ReadWorks, which includes an ELL-friendly feature:
Use the “Paired Texts: Spanish-English” filter in the ReadWorks library to find passages in both languages side-by-side.
