Administering an assessment is a valuable opportunity to understand your student’s academic progress — but to get the most meaningful results, it’s important to create the right environment and approach.
Follow these tips to ensure the assessment reflects your student’s true abilities and needs.
Set the Right Expectations
Before beginning the test:
- Let your student know the purpose of the assessment:
“This is just to see what you already know and where we can help you grow!” - Reassure them:
“You won’t be graded. Just try your best — it’s totally okay if you don’t know every answer.”
Create a Quiet Testing Environment
- Minimize distractions (e.g., background noise, other windows open)
- Encourage your student to take their time and read each question carefully
- Ask them to use scratch paper if helpful
Creating a calm, pressure-free atmosphere reduces anxiety and improves focus.
Don’t Help with Answers
Even though it’s tempting to step in, remember:
- Do not assist your student with solving problems or giving hints
- Make sure they are doing the work and giving their answers
- This helps ensure we get an accurate picture of what they can do independently
- Explain that "helping during the test would give us the wrong information and could lead to the wrong kind of support."
