Why Being Unbiased Matters
Unbiased survey results ensure we capture the true voice of the student. When students feel free to respond honestly, we gain better insights into what’s working and what needs improvement. If tutors unintentionally influence responses, it can skew data and hinder our ability to adapt and grow as an organization.
Guidelines for Administering Surveys Effectively
1. Let the Student Lead
Students should read and answer each question on their own whenever possible.
If they need help reading or understanding a question, feel free to clarify the wording—but do not interpret it for them or suggest answers.
2. Avoid Swaying Responses
Use neutral language. For example, avoid saying things like “This next part is really easy” or “You’ve done so well so far, right?”
Don’t use facial expressions or tone that suggests what a “good” answer might be.
3. Encourage Honesty
Remind students that there are no right or wrong answers, and that their honest feedback is valuable.

“These questions help us understand how you’re feeling. You can be completely honest—even if something didn’t go well, that helps us know what to improve.”
4. For Academic Surveys
Ensure that students complete the academic assessments independently.
It’s okay to motivate or encourage focus, but don’t assist with the actual work or confirm whether answers are correct.
5. Create a Comfortable Environment
Help students feel safe and unpressured while answering. Stay patient, give them time, and reassure them that their voice matters.
