The Live Scan Background Check
A Live Scan Background check is an inkless, electronic means of capturing fingerprints in a digitized format and then transmitting them to a state repository such as the California Department of Justice.
Step Up Tutoring utilizes Live Scan in order to partner with premier school districts, such as LAUSD, which require the tutor to have this completed before being able to tutor their student. Results from the Live Scan are expected within 2-3 days, but as a federal process, it can be delayed.
Getting a Live Scan Background Check
Live Scan background checks are able to be completed at public live scan sites. Alternatively, you can search on Google by typing in ‘live scan location,” followed your zip code. Please note that this is exclusive to California-based tutors.
Step Up Tutoring has also partnered with a mobile Live Scan partner in Los Angeles, which you can obtain more information on by reaching out to onboarding@stepuptutoring.org.
Steps to complete your Live Scan Background Check
Step 1: Fill out this form
You can fill it out online or print it and then fill it out. Many Live Scan locations will accept a filled-out form emailed prior to your appointment. Note: You do not need to fill out the Contact Telephone Number, OCA Number, Billing Number, or Misc. Number
Step 2: Get Fingerprinted
Once you have obtained the necessary forms from the applicant agency, go to a local Live Scan site to be fingerprinted. To find the site nearest to you and a listing of fees, see Public Live Scan Sites or click here. Select the county and type your neighborhood in the search. You can find the same list of counties at the end of this document. Please note: You must present valid photo identification when being fingerprinted. Expired identification information will not be accepted.
A fingerprint-rolling fee may be collected when you get your fingerprints taken. Since this fee varies widely among locations, you will want to review the cost before going to a fingerprinting site. Be sure to check for any restrictions on the payment method, such as cash or money order only. The List of Applicant Live Scan Sites provides information by location on fees, hours of operation, and if an appointment is needed.
A criminal history processing fee is also collected by the DOJ and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for the background checks. While often paid by the requesting agency, some applicants may be required to pay this fee themselves, so check with your requesting applicant agency.
Step 3: Wait for the results
Once the submission is received and processed, the DOJ will respond to the applicant agency electronically or via U.S. mail. Step Up Tutoring will be given the results and will let you know whether or not you were cleared! This process typically only takes a few days but may take up to 2 weeks.
Please keep the paper and/or take a picture of the form. We can search by your date of birth and ATI number (written in by the Live Scan attendant) in case the results get lost or are delayed. You can also check if it was completed here: https://applicantstatus.doj.ca.gov/
