Work-Study Programs
Work-Study is an umbrella term for a number of programs, mostly administered by universities or state programs, that tutors can volunteer through. These outside programs provide pay to tutors which corresponds with the time spent volunteering, in this case through Step Up Tutoring. Many questions regarding Work Study may have slightly different answers, depending on which program you signed on with.
Becoming a Work-Study Tutor
If you are interested in volunteering with Step Up Tutoring through a Work Study program, you'll want to be in contact with your specific institution, as well as contacting our work study team workstudy@stepuptutoring.org to confirm if there is an existing partnership.
There is not currently a way to participate in a Work-Study program if you started with Step Up Tutoring through a different process. Most Work Study programs are administered through a college or university, but if you are interested, you are encouraged to contact the Work Study email above.
Time Limitations with Work-Study
Usually you cannot tutor year-round under a Work-Study program. Different programs have different specific start and end dates which must be followed strictly. This means you may have to plan ahead about when you will need to wrap up work with a student. Step Up and your program will send reminders related to this.
As a Work-Study tutor, you cannot tutor as much as you want with. There are limitations put on how many students you can work with at the same time, and on the maximum amount of time you can invoice over the course of a set time period. This will vary depending on your program. While we try to work with you to help prevent exceeding your work study grant, it is ultimately your responsibility to monitor that your use of hours doesn’t exceed that allowed by your program. Going over the allowed number of hours without prior authorization will result in an immediate halt to tutoring.

Is there any way I can continue tutoring unpaid if I started with pay?
A. Work Study programs do come with limitations, and it is common for them to not allow volunteers to continue as unpaid tutors after their paid time is completed. Do I need to record the time I spend working anywhere?
A. Yes, you are required to record your own time. We recommend that tutors always keep an independent record of the time spent tutoring, which they can refer back to. In addition, your university will provide you with their own timesheet system. Detailed instructions on how to use the system will be given to you during your hiring appointments. You MUST complete your timesheet on or before the payroll deadline to ensure timely approval and pay. You can learn more about Timesheets and Payment with this article.
