Starting your tutoring journey at Step Up Tutoring? This guide will walk you through your first steps—from getting matched to maintaining a consistent schedule. These five steps ensure a smooth start and set you up for a successful tutoring experience.
1. Getting Matched with a Student
After completing onboarding, be on the lookout for emails and texts notifying you of a student match. Your match timeline depends on:
-
Availability: The more time slots you list in your tutor portal, the sooner you may get matched.
-
Language Skills: Students frequently request tutors who speak languages like Spanish. Tutors with language skills may be prioritized for faster matching.
Make sure to regularly check your email and text messages so you don’t miss your match.
2. Text the Student’s Guardian
Once you’re matched, you’ll receive a text message introducing you to your student’s guardian. Here's what to do:
-
Introduce yourself within 24 hours of receiving the match text.
-
Confirm that the suggested session time works for the guardian.
-
Work with them to schedule your first session.
Timely and professional communication helps build trust and gets your sessions started on the right foot.
3. Follow Up as Needed
If you don’t hear back from the guardian:
-
Send a follow-up text 24 hours after your initial message.
-
You may send up to three attempts (text and/or phone).
-

4. Hold Your First Session
Aim to hold your first session within one week of getting matched. This quick start helps build momentum and establishes a routine for both you and your student.
5. Keep a Regular Schedule
Consistency is key. Stick to the same two weekly time slots to provide stability for your student and make scheduling easier for families. During onboarding, you'll learn how to reschedule or request a substitute if needed.
