Step Up Tutoring welcomes college students and community volunteers who are passionate about supporting young learners. Whether you are participating through a Work Study program, Angeleno Corps, College Corps, or volunteering independently, we invite you to apply.
Who Can Apply
We welcome applications from:
Federal Work Study students
Angeleno Corps participants
College Corps members
Volunteers from any background
Our tutors come from a wide range of academic fields, majors, and experiences.
Tutoring Responsibilities
Tutors will work with students in grades 2–8 in one of two subject areas:
Reading
Math
Step Up provides comprehensive training to help tutors succeed, including:
Tutoring strategies
Step Up curriculum guidance
Technology training for our online platform
Time Commitment
A tutor’s weekly hours depend on their program requirements:
Work Study and College Corps participants typically commit 2–10 hours per week, based on their award
Volunteers may choose a schedule that fits their availability
Tutors will meet with each assigned student twice a week for 45 minutes per session.
Technology Requirements
Tutors must have access to:
A laptop, Chromebook, or tablet that connects to the internet
Reliable internet access for online tutoring sessions
Support for University Tutors
For tutors recruited through university partnerships, Step Up provides additional support:
Tutors submit time sheets as required by their Work Study or service programs
Step Up is happy to provide letters of recommendation upon request
Tutors receive ongoing training, coaching, and guidance throughout their experience
